Planning a trip to explore the ancient tombs in the Valley of the Kings? Before you set out, here are some essential tips that you’ll want to know.
When I visited Luxor to see the Valley of the Kings, I quickly realized how challenging it could be to plan a trip. I wasn't sure how to get to the valley or which tombs to prioritize. After spending time exploring this remarkable Ancient Egyptian site, I've compiled these 8 tips to help you make the most of your visit!

About the Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Egypt's most famous necropolises. Nestled beneath the ancient Theban Hills, just outside modern Luxor, this stark valley served as the sacred burial ground for the New Kingdom pharaohs (1539-1075 BCE). The site was chosen for its location beneath the peak of al-Qurn (dehent), a natural pyramid-shaped mountain that dominates the landscape.
Tourists have marveled at this iconic site since Roman times. In fact, some tombs contain Latin and Greek graffiti dating back as far as 278 BCE! While the pharaohs were buried with their greatest treasures, most tombs have been looted over the centuries. A notable exception is the 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of King Tutankhamun's tomb, which remained untouched for millennia. Today, Egyptologists and local authorities work hard to preserve these ancient tombs, with guarded entrances and a network of security cameras.
8 Tips for Visiting Ancient Egypt's Valley of the Kings
1. Your Standard Entrance Ticket Only Covers Three Tombs
The current entrance fee for the Valley of the Kings is 600 EGP per person, plus 20 EGP for a tram ride from the entrance. This ticket includes access to three tombs. However, there are four additional tombs, including King Tutankhamun's, that require an extra fee and are not included in the standard ticket. 2. There Are Several Ways to Reach the Valley
Getting to the Valley of the Kings from Luxor offers several options. If you prefer convenience and an informative experience, consider booking a guided tour. I had a great experience with TravelTalk Tours, which included a visit to the Valley and a hot air balloon ride over Luxor. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi, which takes about 45 minutes and costs between 200-300 EGP. To save on transport, consider taking a ferry across the Nile for just 5 EGP, which lands you closer to the valley on the West Bank. If you choose this option, negotiate a return trip with your taxi driver in advance or hire them for the day to avoid any hassle. Once you arrive, the tram to the valley costs 20 EGP per person.
3. The Valley Is Divided into Two Sections
The Valley of the Kings is split into two sections: the East Valley and the West Valley. The East Valley, which contains most of the tombs, is the main area referred to as the Valley of the Kings. The West Valley, known as the Valley of the Monkeys, contains only one tomb: that of Amenhotep III (WV22). The nearby Valley of the Queens, located about 15 kilometers away, is where the high priests buried the wives of the Pharaohs.
4. Tour Guides Cannot Lecture Inside the Tombs
To minimize congestion and maintain a peaceful atmosphere, tour guides are not allowed to give lectures inside the tombs. If you book a guided tour, your guide will typically provide information either outside the tomb entrances or at a nearby rest area, allowing you to explore the tombs at your own pace. It's a good idea to plan ahead and decide which tombs you want to prioritize.
5. Walk in a Single File Inside the Tombs
Given the popularity of the Valley of the Kings, the tombs can become quite crowded. It's best to walk in a single-file line inside the tombs, allowing everyone to see the walls and paintings more clearly. To avoid the crowds and the heat, aim to arrive early, as the valley opens around 6 AM.
6. Prepare for the Heat
The Valley of the Kings is located in a desert, so expect very hot temperatures, especially when walking between the tombs. The rock-cut tombs themselves are often cooler since many extend far beneath the surface. To make the most of your visit, spend as much time as possible inside the tombs.
7. Plan to Spend Several Hours Exploring
While you could rush through the Valley of the Kings, taking the time to explore each tomb thoroughly is well worth it. Plan to spend 1-2 hours per tomb to fully appreciate the remarkable preservation of these ancient sites. If you're visiting three tombs plus those requiring an additional fee, set aside at least 5-6 hours for your visit.
